Coconut Sugar Business in West Java, Indonesia gets Sweeter

Coconut sugar producers in Purbalingga, West Java, Indonesia reaped higher profits as the price of coconut sugar increased significantly.Currently, the middleman price of coconut sugar is Rp. 12,000 (US$1.3) per kg meanwhile the local market price has reached Rp. 14,000 (US$1.5) per kg. Slamet, one of the coconut sugar producers in Bumisari village, Bojongsari sub-district, said that the price has increased since last month. Previously, the middleman price was Rp. 9,000 then it became Rp. 10,000. This week it has become Rp. 12,000. Further, he explained that the price increased was due to increasing demand from other regions coupled with the decrease in the sap production. It seemed that the prolonged rainy season had reduced the sap that could be tapped. Usually he can produce 12 kg per day, now he can only produce 9 kg per day. Bumisari Village is one of coconut sugar production centers in West Java as half of its villagers are coconut sugar producers. The coconut sugar produced from this village is sold in the market and sent to the ketchup producers in Central Java. (http://www.suaramerdeka.com)
